- How to remove all hyperlinks in a Word document:
Select all, then hit shift-command-F9 on the Mac (or shift-control-F9 on Windows). - Which fonts can be safely deleted in OS X:
Download the document “Best Practices for Managing Fonts in Mac OS X” from Extensis.com.
These are both things I’ve had to look up a dozen times before. Perhaps you have, too.
Looked anything up lately? Share!

Terrific! Thank you.
I always have to look up how to create a spam-resistant email link (http://www.wbwip.com/wbw/emailencoder.html). I suppose that’s more of a tool than a thing I look up.
I also have to look up how to make a pop-up window link (as opposed to having a link open in a new window). That’s probably too long to post in a comment, but where I look it up is in the O’Reilly Web Site Cookbook. Which is just a generally useful book, by the way.
That font-removal tip is a good one; all I’ve got here is Fontbook, as I was unable to magically graft Suitcase onto this computer in the waning days of the last position. Did manage to snag a few fonts, though, so now I can pack ’em on after stripping out the dross. Thanks!
Oh, Schizo! Do you know about the nice, free Linotype font manager? That’s what I use. I like that it lets you create “smart folders,” i.e., ones whose contents refresh automatically.
Cindy, thanks for the e-mail obscuralation link. I used to have a bookmark to a tool like that, years ago, but then it went dead.
Oh, another thing I looked up recently, though I’m not sure yet if I’ll be using them for the project at hand, is gorgeous, free Photoshop brushes. You have to read the terms of use on these; they’re not free free free. But they’re mostly free.
I will have to check out the Linotype tool; thanks!
I just used the hyperlinks-removal tip in an editing test I’m working on today, so this too was helpful.
Ah the get rid of hyperlinks tip is a treat! Thanks for that one…
Glad you found it useful, guys. I originally learned that trick from Editorium Update.
Better yet, though, would be for Microsoft to turn automatic hyperlinking in Word off, which would save everyone a whole lot of irritation. Does anybody use that “feature”?
great info, India.
Hello India– The godsend that is Linotype Font Explorer now also contains an excellent tool, under Tools/Clean System Fonts Folders. This move any non-Mac OSX font into a new folder on the desktop. For someone who has to troubleshoot Macs all day it resolves a ton of mysterious font-related issues. You can even install Font Explorer on a machine and not use it to manage your fonts if for some reason you are in love with Suitcase or some such–just use it the Tools menu to run the other cache cleaning routines , etc.
Hello, Corin!
Ooh, interesting. I hadn’t noticed that about Font Explorer.
(Is anybody in love with Suitcase? I mean, I like it a hair better than FontReserve, but only one single hair. And that, only with auto-activation turned completely off.)
